GTA San Andreas Beginner Modding Guide
Want to install cars, scripts or other mods for the classic GTA San Andreas on PC? This guide will help you set up a clean and mod-friendly installation of GTA San Andreas. No previous modding experience is required.
1. Make sure you have a compatible GTA San Andreas version
Many GTA San Andreas mods were originally developed for GTA San Andreas 1.0 US. Newer versions of the game, such as some Steam and Rockstar Games Launcher releases, may not work correctly with older ASI plugins, CLEO scripts and other classic mods.
For this reason, GTA San Andreas 1.0 US is generally recommended for modding. If you have a newer version of the game, you may need to downgrade it first.
What is the difference between 1.0 US and the Compact EXE?
You will often see two terms when reading GTA San Andreas modding instructions: 1.0 US and Compact EXE. They are related, but they are not exactly the same thing.
GTA San Andreas 1.0 US refers to the original US version 1.0 of the game. This version became the standard for GTA San Andreas modding and is supported by a large number of classic mods.
The Compact EXE is a modified form of the 1.0 US executable from which the original copy-protection code has been removed. As a result, the executable is much smaller while retaining the game code expected by many mods.
The commonly used GTA SA 1.0 US Compact EXE has an exact file size of 5,189,632 bytes (4.94 MiB).
In simple terms:
- 1.0 US describes the game version.
- Compact EXE describes a particular modified executable based on that version.
Some mods work with both, while others specifically require one particular executable. Always check the requirements on the mod's download page or in its README.
2. Install an ASI Loader
An ASI Loader allows GTA San Andreas to load .asi plugins.
Many important GTA San Andreas mods use this format.
We recommend Silent's ASI Loader.
Download Silent's ASI Loader from GitHub
Download the release archive and extract it directly into your GTA San Andreas main directory.
This is the folder containing gta_sa.exe.
Depending on the package, you will usually install files such as:
vorbisFile.dll vorbisHooked.dll
If Windows asks whether you want to replace the existing vorbisFile.dll,
make a backup of the original file first and then confirm the replacement.
3. Install SilentPatch
SilentPatch is highly recommended, even if you only want to install a few mods.
GTA San Andreas is an old game and has a number of bugs and compatibility problems on modern computers. SilentPatch fixes many problems in the original PC version without fundamentally changing the gameplay.
Download SilentPatch from GitHub
Download the GTA San Andreas version of SilentPatch and extract it into your GTA San Andreas directory.
You should then have files such as:
SilentPatchSA.asi SilentPatchSA.ini
Start GTA San Andreas once and check that everything works before continuing.
4. Install Mod Loader
Mod Loader is one of the most useful tools for GTA San Andreas modding and is highly recommended for beginners.
Traditionally, installing GTA mods required manually replacing files inside game archives
such as gta3.img. Mod Loader allows many modifications to be loaded from separate
folders instead, leaving the original files untouched.
Download Mod Loader from GitHub
Extract the Mod Loader files into your GTA San Andreas directory. You should then have:
modloader.asi modloader\
Start GTA San Andreas and open:
Options → Mod Configuration
If you can see this menu, Mod Loader has been loaded successfully.
Installing a mod with Mod Loader
Create a separate folder inside modloader for each mod.
For example, a vehicle mod replacing the Infernus could look like this:
GTA San Andreas\
└── modloader\
└── My Car Mod\
├── infernus.dff
└── infernus.txd
The .dff file normally contains the 3D model, while the
.txd file contains its textures.
To remove the mod again, simply remove its folder from modloader.
5. Install CLEO
Some modifications do much more than replace models or textures. They add new gameplay functions, missions, menus or other scripted features.
Many of these mods use CLEO.
CLEO requires an ASI Loader. If you already installed Silent's ASI Loader earlier in this guide, choose the CLEO download that contains only CLEO rather than installing another ASI Loader.
Extract CLEO into your GTA San Andreas directory.
You should then have a directory similar to:
GTA San Andreas\ └── CLEO\
Traditional CLEO scripts commonly use the .cs extension and are usually placed
inside this directory.
Start GTA San Andreas again. If CLEO has loaded correctly, its version information should appear in the main menu.
6. Installing vehicle mods
A simple GTA San Andreas vehicle replacement usually contains two important files:
vehicle.dff vehicle.txd
For example:
modloader\
└── Lamborghini\
├── turismo.dff
└── turismo.txd
This would replace the original Turismo with the downloaded vehicle.
More advanced vehicle mods may additionally contain modifications for files such as:
handling.cfg vehicles.ide carcols.dat carmods.dat
Always read the installation instructions included with the mod. Do not blindly replace your complete original configuration files. Depending on the mod, only individual lines may need to be added or replaced.
Advanced vehicles may also require additional plugins such as ImVehFt, VehFuncs or other dependencies. Required plugins should normally be listed on the GTAInside download page or in the mod's README.
7. Optional: Improved Streaming
The original GTA San Andreas was designed for computers from a very different era. Modern high-poly vehicles and high-resolution textures can therefore put significantly more pressure on the game's streaming system than the original assets.
If you are using large HD modifications or many high-quality vehicle mods, Improved Streaming can help the game handle these assets more reliably.
Beginners installing only a few simple mods usually do not need this immediately. Install additional plugins only when you actually need them or when a mod specifically lists them as a requirement.
Recommended setup
For most beginners, the following setup provides a good foundation:
GTA San Andreas 1.0 US → ASI Loader → SilentPatch → Mod Loader → CLEO → Your Mods
You do not need to install every GTA San Andreas modding tool available. Start with a simple and stable setup and only add additional plugins when a mod requires them.
Troubleshooting
If GTA San Andreas stops working after installing a mod, the most important rule is: don't install even more mods trying to fix it.
Remove the last mod you installed and start the game again. If the game works, you have already narrowed down the cause.
If necessary, temporarily remove all modifications and add them back one at a time. Mod Loader makes this particularly easy because your mods are stored separately.
Also check the mod's GTAInside page and README for required plugins or special installation instructions.
Have fun modding San Andreas!
